Job Description
We are seeking an organized and detail-oriented Accountant to manage the financial record-keeping and accounting functions for our secondary-level educational institution. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing financial statements, maintaining ledgers, processing payments, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The position requires a solid understanding of accounting principles, as well as the ability to work with financial software and tools.
Financial Record-Keeping:
- Maintain and update all financial records including ledgers, journals, and balance sheets.
- Process and reconcile financial transactions, including payments, receipts, and invoices.
- Ensure all records are accurate, complete, and up-to-date.
Preparation of Financial Statements:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements such as profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Analyze financial reports and provide recommendations to management for improvement.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor and track expenditures against budget allocations.
- Provide variance analysis and suggest corrective actions.
Payroll Management:
- Calculate and process payroll for employees, ensuring accurate deductions and timely payments.
- Ensure compliance with tax laws and other payroll-related regulations.
- Manage employee benefits and deductions.
Compliance and Taxation:
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax laws, and financial regulations.
- Prepare and submit tax returns, including VAT, GST, and income tax.
- Assist in audits and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Accounts Payable and Receivable:
- Manage accounts payable (vendor invoices, payments) and accounts receivable (tuition fees, payments from students).
- Track and follow up on outstanding payments and overdue accounts.
- Ensure timely payment of bills and processing of student fee payments.
Cash Management:
- Manage and monitor the school’s cash flow, ensuring adequate liquidity for operations.
- Reconcile bank accounts and ensure that bank statements match internal records.
Internal Control and Reporting:
- Ensure internal controls are in place to safeguard financial assets and prevent fraud.
- Prepare reports for senior management regarding financial performance, operational costs, and areas for improvement.
Job Specification
- A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is an advantage.
- Proven experience as an accountant, ideally in an educational or similar organizational setting.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and tax laws.
- Experience in managing accounts payable/receivable and payroll.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Tally, Sage, or other relevant tools).
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets, formulas, data analysis).
- Familiarity with basic financial reporting and budgeting
- High level of integrity and professionalism in handling sensitive financial data.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times regarding financial matters.
